JUAN PABLO, a shy but perceptive sixteen-year-old with a knack for gloomy poetry, drifts through a protected existence as part of Ecuador’s wealthy class. His uncle, a banker involved in a corruption scandal that sets in motion a nation-wide financial crisis, has taken refuge at the secluded family hacienda in the Andes with his wife and teenage children.
When Juan Pablo has to spend the Carnival holiday in the mountains with them, he must struggle – for the first time – to find a place for himself amidst his bullying cousins and the adults’ deception.
During the tumultuous long weekend, as the family and the country’s banking system fall apart, Juan Pablo develops a friendship with JUANO, an enigmatic, self-assured loner and black-metal fan of modest background who lives nearby.
